We have recently purchased an elderly 36 ft boat that has neglected fawn original Treadmaster diamond deck. It has not been applied in panels but completely over the entire deck (with the occasional, random, gaps showing the original blue deck!). The Treadmaster has started lifting in places and basically looks a REAL mess.

I have cleaned it and have ordered some more of your cleaner.

We don't want to have to remove it all unless we have to but are hoping we can make good the areas where it has lifted and then paint it.

Our questions are:

1 Is it possible to make good decking if it has lifted.

2 Assuming it can all be made good would White Sand paint cover Fawn deck - the hull is dark blue and does not look good with fawn.

3 If we can't make good any suggestions on the removal would be appreciated.

I hope you can assist us with this.

Thanks in anticipation

Gill,

Firstly, apologies for not responding. This enquiry appears to have slipped past us.

In response to your questions

1. Yes it is possible to make good decking that has lifted, If the sheet is in a good condition and you feel it is worth keeping, then it is quite possible to put a new coating of Marine Epoxy Adhesive down; the surface underneath the decking will need to be prepared as you would for laying new material. The existing epoxy will need to be sanded away to give an even and cleaned surface; this surface will then need to be wiped with Propanol or Toluene to ensure that all sanding dust has been removed, the back surface of the Treadmaster should if possible also be wiped. Once this has dried off (it should only take a matter of a couple of minutes) the epoxy can be applied(we normally reckon that 1pack of Marine Epoxy will cover 2 full sheets of Treadmaster), it will need to be weighted to ensure that the edge does not try to lift up.

2. White Sand Treadcote will certainly cover a Fawn coloured sheet, it is quite likely however that two coats will be required to ensure a good even colour change is achieved.

3. If there are any sheets of the existing decking that are beyond repair, then they will need to be removed. The sheets of Treadmaster will need to removed using a sander to physically sand the sheet down and also to remove the existing epoxy from the surface of the boat deck. (Caution will need to be taken as you sand through the epoxy that you do not damage the surface of the deck itself). I would certainly recommend using a mask for this job as you will generate a lot of dust.

I hope that this helps, and apologies again for the delay in responding

I am putting a solar panel on the foredeck which will entail removal of the most part of the treadmaster panel (diamond design). Can u please tell me the best way to lift the treadmaster panel before sanding.

Brian,

Unfortunately, if the Treadmaster has been glued using Treadmaster Marine Epoxy, then there is no way to 'lift' sheets as the bond between the two should be very strong and very long lasting, and the only way to be able to get access to the deck below is to physically remove the entire Treadmaster Diamond pattern sheet (please see the above response regarding removal).

If, in the unlikely event that it has been bonded using Treadmaster Marine Contact adhesive, then applying heat to the surface will soften the adhesive allowing the sheet to be lifted. (approximately 50 - 60°C should be sufficient to begin softening).
