Which Adhesive is best for my applictation?

There are many Epoxy and contact adhesives on the market, the following applies specifically to our products but many of the features are common to other products.

Treadmaster Marine Contact adhesive is a specific marine grade of contact adhesive, this means the adhesive will try to immediately 'grab' whatever surface it is applied to, this can mean that it can be difficult to move sheets around to get an exact positioning once the material is in place.

The adhesive will begin to harden quite quickly, but the final bond strength is less than you would get with an epoxy adhesive; this does mean that it is easier to remove when you want to replace the sheets, but not as good at holding them in position, another important fact to consider with Contact adhesives is that they begin to soften with temperature, and if your boat is in the Mediterranean you could find that on a very hot day the adhesive will soften quite considerably, and so we would not recommend there use in very warm climates.

Treadmaster Marine Epoxy adhesive is a two part adhesive, when the two parts are mixed together the adhesive will harden over time, this hardening process is much slower than with a contact adhesive(a pot life of about 1hour is usual although this will reduce as the temperature rises); and the adhesive is initially more liquid allowing much easier moving of the Treadmaster sheets to get an exact position. As the adhesive takes time to harden, once the sheets are in position they should be weighted down in order to hold them in position whilst the adhesive hardens. However, once the adhesive had hardened Treadmaster Marine Epoxy gives a very strong bond that is not effected by temperature (except at very high temperatures, i.e. significantly above 70°C). This does make removal much more difficult.

So, if you are fixing Treadmaster in the Mediterranean, I would most definitely recommend using Treadmaster Marine Epoxy adhesive.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE  (Contact Adhesive)

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil and grease.

Existing paint, vanish, waxes, polishes, etc., must be removed.

Application

Stir thoroughly before use.  The adhesive can be applied by brush or roller coater.  Cut the Treadmaster to shape and mask off the deck area to fit exactly the Treadmaster panel. A space of 1-2" should be left between adjacent panels.  Apply a thin, even coat of adhesive to both surfaces, work fairly quickly and take care to keep the adhesive away from the face side of the Treadmaster. Allow to dry until the adhesive is only just touch dry (5 - 10 minutes depending on temperature). Then align the panel carefully and bring into contact with the deck surface, applying firm pressure, preferably with a small hand roller over the whole panel. Work from the centre to the edge to avoid air entrapment.

Storage Conditions

Keep containers closed and in a cool (10°C - 20°C) dry place away from direct sunlight.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE  (2 Pack Epoxy)

Also see our fitting video for a demonstration of how to use Treadmaster 2 Park Epoxy Adhesive.

One complete pack is sufficient for two full 1200 x 900 mm sheets of Treadmaster. If smaller quantity is required, Part A and Part B should be mixed in equal amounts.

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil and grease.  Existing paint, vanish, waxes, polishes, etc., must be removed. Fiberglass, aluminum and steel surfaces should be lightly abraded with a nylon scouring pad and all dust removed.

Mixing

Prepare the Treadmaster and deck before mixing the resin. Transfer the contents of container B into container A and mix thoroughly until the colour is consistent throughout the mix.

Once mixed, the adhesive must be used without delay - under average environmental conditions a pot life of 20 minutes in the tin can be expected.  Spreading the adhesive on to a flat plate after mixing will extend the useful pot life by helping to dissipate heat generated by the curing reaction.

The adhesive should not be used when ambient temperatures are below 10°C or above 30°C.

Immediately after use, clean tools, mixing vessels, brushes, etc. with methylated spirit

Application

Apply adhesive using a serrated scraper, to the underside of the Treadmaster and to the surface to which it is to be bonded. Position the Treadmaster and carefully roll from centre to edge, apply pressure to consolidate the adhesive layers, ensuring that no air is trapped between the surfaces.

Where possible, adhesive should be allowed to extrude between the edges of adjacent mats, to give a positive seal against ingress of water.  Excess adhesive should be wiped off promptly with methylated spirit. Depending on environmental conditions the adhesive will begin to set in 2 - 4 hours and full strength will be achieved after 24 hours.
